Learning Outcomes The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to: Perform basic patient examinations and collect data on vital signs. Restrain and manage small animals in clinical situations. Administer medications by common drug routes and prepare pharmaceuticals as prescribed by a veterinarian. Prepare anesthetic delivery systems, induce anesthesia, and monitor patients under anesthesia. Prepare and maintain the surgical area and assist during surgical procedures. Perform dental prophylactic procedures on dogs and cats. Produce standard diagnostic radiographs. Collect and process samples for diagnostic laboratory work. Perform common veterinary diagnostic test, such as blood chemistries, differentials, culture and sensitivities and EKG`s. Perform basic veterinary practice management including computer applications. Recognize behavioral signs of small animals. Counsel clients especially in the area of pet nutrition. Identify and apply discipline- specific practices that contribute to the local and global community through social responsibility, economic commitment and environmental stewardship. Courses. Programs at Algonquin College are delivered using a variety of instruction modes. Courses may be offered in the classroom or lab, entirely online, or in a hybrid mode which combines classroom sessions with online learning activities. ENL1. 81. 3S Communications I Communication remains an essential skill sought by employers, regardless of discipline or field of study. Using a practical, vocation- oriented approach, students focus on meeting the requirements of effective communication. Students practice writing, speaking, reading, listening, locating and documenting information, and using technology to communicate professionally. Students develop and strengthen communication skills that contribute to success in both educational and workplace environments. Students understand the theory supporting these tests and are able to perform fecal flotations, partial urinalysis, assess blood for anemia, and isolate and identify common microbial pathogens. Co- requisites: VET1. VET1. 10. 2 and VET1. VET1. 10. 1 Animal Care and Etymology The professional role of the veterinary technician in the animal health industry is discussed. Areas of study include veterinary medical terminology, veterinary personnel and professional organizations, pet life cycles, preventative medicine, personal and patient safety, ethical issues and professionalism. Co- requisites: VET1. VET1. 10. 2 and VET1. VET1. 10. 2 Comparative Animal Anatomy and Physiology I Students examine the structure and function of cells including gross and histological specimens of the skeletal, muscular, digestive and nervous systems of common domestic animals. Students discuss common pathological conditions affecting these organ systems in small and large animal species. Co- requisites: VET1. VET1. 10. 1 and VET1. VET1. 10. 3 Veterinary Practice Software The use of medical data management software is an essential skill for veterinary professionals. Students become familiar with Avimark, the industry standard in veterinary practice management software. Key skills acquired include scheduling and booking appointments, client file setup, updating medical records, integration of lab results, inventory control, estimate and invoice generation and completion of transactions. Topics covered include animal evolution, domestication and the physiological and developmental basis of behaviour. Normal and aberrant manifestations of domestic animal behaviour, followed by treatment and preventative measures are outlined. Current animal welfare issues relating to the animal industry are examined and discussed. Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) legislation is detailed, promoting hazard recognition and prevention of work- related injuries and illnesses. An overview of relevant legislation and regulatory organizations is acquired. Other topics covered include chemical hazards, fire prevention, ergonomics, emergency protocols and mental health. Veterinary laboratory, radiography and nutrition calculations are introduced. Co- requisites: VET1. VET1. 10. 1 and VET1. Level: 0. 2Hours. ENL5. 50. 1 Professional Communication Skills for Veterinary Technicians Strong oral and written communication skills are essential to veterinary technicians working in clinical practices, research facilities, and community or rescue organizations. Using a variety of workplace scenarios, students develop and practise the written and oral skills they need to communicate confidently and effectively with the public and other members of the veterinary team. The importance of critical thinking in a medical profession is also explored, and students are given ample opportunity to enhance and apply their critical- thinking skills. Prerequisites: ENL1. S (2) and VET1. 10. GEN2. 00. 3V Healthy Lifestyle Through self- evaluation, weekly journals, research and hands- on exercises students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle. Content includes the classification of drugs, their effects and contraindications. Veterinary pharmacy management is also addressed and practice dispensing medication is included. VET1. 20. 6 Veterinary Radiography The formation and properties of x- rays, the principles of radiographic image formation, image processing and applied radiography are studied. The purpose and operation of the components of veterinary radiography units are discussed with an emphasis on radiation safety. Prerequisites: VET1. VET1. 10. 1 and VET1. VET1. 12. 3 and VET1. Co- requisites: VET1. VET1. 20. 9 1. VET1. 20. 7 Surgery and Anesthesia The student demonstrates theoretical and applied knowledge in the following areas: clinical asepsis, anesthesiology, assistance in surgical techniques and animal nursing techniques. VET1. 20. 8 Comparative Animal Anatomy and Physiology II Students examine the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, endocrine, integumentary system and special senses.
